New Ft. Lauderdale Building uses High-Performance Glazing System to Meet Hurricane and Energy Needs

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla — Crawford-Tracey Corporation, a leading Florida-based glazing contractor specializing in unitized and pre-glazed curtain wall and window wall products, has recently completed the glazing package for the Broward County Aviation Department’s new maintenance facility.
The new maintenance facility building is a critical 24/7 facility for Broward County, located at a Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. The architect of record is Walters-Zackria Associates in Ft. Lauderdale and the General Contractor was Morganti out of West Palm Beach. Crawford-Tracey was selected to manufacture and install their Pro-Tech 7SG pre-glazed, unitized curtain wall system.
Key design criteria for the glazing system included a large missile impact-resistant product, energy efficiency to contribute in achieving a LEED Silver certification, and blocking aircraft engine noise.
Crawford-Tracey’s Pro-Tech 7SG offered all three and more. The Pro-Tech 7SG system used a laminated, insulated glass make-up with a low-e coating and a blue-green tint, manufactured by Viracon. Beyond meeting the impact and energy efficiency requirements of the project, the Pro-Tech 7SG also provided a water infiltration resistance rating of 100 psf, the highest in the industry – the industry standard is 12 to 15 psf. Crawford-Tracey worked with the design team of Walters Zackria Associates to provide this high-performance glazing system. Spandrel glazing was also included in the dynamic building design with three accent colors to provide splashes of color.
“We had many design challenges on this project,” says Abbas Zackria, Principal Architect for Walters-Zackria Associates. “From a glazing standpoint, we needed a window system that worked aesthetically but also provided impact-resistance, meeting South Florida’s large-missile requirements. Just as important was the ability for this system to provide energy efficiency that would contribute to the LEED certification we were trying to achieve and to reduce the aircraft noise and provide a comfortable indoor space for the facility staff. Crawford-Tracey Corporation glazing system superior performance far exceeded our expectations.”
